In the ancient times, today's Varaždinske Toplice was home to the widely renowned Roman settlement, Aquae Iasae (1st-4th century). In 1953, a complex of Roman public architecture covering an area of 6000m2 was uncovered, constructed in various phases from the 1st to the 4th century.
The fortress, known as the Old Town, is a lowland fortification that originated in the Middle Ages at the intersection of ancient trade routes near the Drava River. It served as the centrepiece of an independent feudal estate adjacent to the royal and free city of Varaždin and played a crucial defensive role throughout history. This stronghold is characterized by its preserved architectural foundation, consisting of rectangular towers built during the late 14th century. In the mid-15th century, Ulrich of Celje arranged the vicinity of the fortress and constructed a granary building to meet the needs of the fortress's inhabitants. In the mid-16th century, Varaždin's Old Town was transformed into a modern water fortress with low defensive towers – rondels – connected by galleries of defensive corridors equipped with gunports for firearms. It is surrounded by moats and tall earthen ramparts with bastions, many of which have been largely preserved to this day, emphasizing its exclusive historical significance.
